It’s never to late to follow your dream!Hi there! Born and raised in the good ol’ midwest of USA, my favorite activities as a child were always drawing and painting. Looking back, I realize that even then I drew imaginary storybook scenes, landscapes, characters and animals….like, All. The. Time. Following in the footsteps of many artists in my family, after high school I went on to university to study for a B.A. in Art. However, for a time after that, I wasn’t sure how to make a career out of art and ended up working in business management and graphic design for several years and even moved to Dubai, where I still live today. I also founded Natalie Merheb Design in 2009, a branding and web design studio. For many years, illustrating children’s books remained a far off dream.
After the birth of my twin girls in 2014, I began illustrating posters for my daughters’ bedroom and sold them to others through my shop. As my skill and confidence grew, I decided to finally pursue my dream of illustrating children’s books. But I knew I couldn’t just jump right in the deep end, so I drew daily for nearly two years, researched the industry, pursued professional critiques of my work, joined peer groups, and spoke with art directors and others in the industry. I put considerable effort in learning the craft of visual storytelling, as well as developing a style that I enjoyed, came naturally to me, and was sellable in today’s market. So far, it seems to be paying off. The most important thing I have learned on my journey? It’s never to late to follow your dream!
